Is it sulphur or sulfur?
Much to my surprise, on checking with the authorities—International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Geological Society of London (GSL), and Oxford Dictionaries—they all agree that sulfur is the preferred chemical spelling. The -ph- spelling is only retained in non-technical, non–North American texts. Personally, it’s a bit like the Oxford telling us to spell colour without a u. But if the Geological Society of London can accept sulfur, then I guess I can too.
