Is it earned or earnt?
I know many have opinions on this, but “earnt” isn’t recognised by Oxford, and, as far as I’m concerned, that’s where the matter ends. I follow the advice of recognised authorities, not the opinion of my aunty Mavis nor her manicurist.
I also have opinions, such as spelling sulfur with an -f- is an assault on our national heritage, but that’s just my opinion (Mavis, by the way, agrees with me). But if the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) says spell it with an -f-, then I spell it with an -f- because IUPAC is the recognised authority on all things chemical. And, although some might say that I know more than most about language and grammar, my opinion means diddly-squat.
